[Southern Reach] Reeds and Swamps

Another drone track!

Inspired by rereading books from the Southern Reach series. I absolutely love them and how batshit psychedelic crazy horrific things happen in there, how Area X is a whole character on its own. If you have not read them, I absolutely completely recommend them. Though they are weird and you might not come out unscathed. The 2018 Annihilation was a loose adaptation of the first book, though Area X is pretty different in that movie than in the books.

This is inspired by a scene in the 4th book. Maybe it was not the best idea to send on an expedition a bunch of drugged up people ready to shoot anything that moves into the anomaly that is the Area X. Especially after having seen what it had done to the chicken. And did I mention the rabbits?

So yeah, drone music. It somehow works for me in pulling me into the situation. Though maybe not for everyone.

Tone Matrix

Love the dark sound of the main drone along with a sound that almost has a breathing rhythm to it. Oooof the sfx really add a claustrophobic feel to it as the drone rings out behind it. Excellent work!

Oh yeah, at first I thought I hadn't heard of the Southern Reach series, but once you mentioned the movie Annihilation I remembered I did read them. Just forgot they were called Southern Reach. I think there were only 3 of them out when I read them, so I don't think I've read the fourth one. It's been a while, but I remember they were super trippy and creepy. Yeah, this track captures that ominous "WTF is happening?" vibe really well. I probably wouldn't want to go anywhere near Area X anyway, but if this were playing, I'd definitely take it as a warning and steer clear.

The 4th book Absolution was released in 2024 and it is BY FAR the trippiest and weirdest one. Without spoiler, one section is about the very first expedition. The expedition portrayed in Annihilation was a walk in the park in comparison.
